Couples Counselling – The Gottman Method

The Gottman Method Couples Therapy is an approach to couples therapy that starts with a thorough assessment of the couple relationship and integrates research-based interventions.

Assessment

The assessment includes three sessions. The first one is a joint assessment. The second session is split into two individual interviews. Both spouses also complete an online questionnaire. During the third and final assessment session the couple get detailed feedback on their relationship. Together with the therapist the couple decides if couples work is the best way forward and if it is, then the goals of the sessions will be discussed.

Interventions
The Gottman Method interventions are designed to help couples increase closeness and intimacy, manage conflict better by replacing negative conflict patterns with positive interactions, heal from past hurts, and to create shared meaning. Couples seek therapy for:

  • Conflict and arguments
  • Poor communication
  • Emotional distance
  • Sexual difficulties
  • Betrayals of trust, including infidelity
  • Differences in values and beliefs, such as with money and parenting

Couples who are doing well can also benefit from the Gottman Method Couples Therapy by strengthening their relationship further, finding more joy in their shared lives together and find healthier ways to cope with issues as they arise in the future.
